We had an amazing dinner tonight at La Cubana New York, the newly opened Homestyle Cuban spot created by friend and Food Network celebrity Chef Carl Ruiz! Upon entering, you are whisked away to Cuba via the Havana inspired decor and the sexy, sultry drum beats of Cuban music. Specialty cocktails and authentic rustic Cuban cuisine is at the center of this house of #Ruizing.
We had both Beef and Spinach empanadas and while the fillings of these are incredible, it’s the lard in the dough that makes them spectacular.
The Pork Belly appetizer with Guava dipping sauce was everything you want pork belly to be; tender meat layer with a fat layer that is perfectly rendered so you don’t feel like you’re taking a drink at Jiffy Lube.
The Calabaza Al Forno ,oven-roasted savory pumpkin with pickled onion was a real shocker because the texture was unlike any pumpkin or squash I’ve ever had. Sweet and Savory with a dry, almost chalky mouth feel....I couldn’t stop eating it!
The savory seasoned ground beef topped with florets of mashed potatoes with toasty edges makes the Papas Rellenos, a Cuban Cottage pie, a reall #winning start to great entrees to come.
We had the Skirt Steak, just because Cubans REALLY know how to cook steak. It was tender and beefy and the Chimichurri on top along with the Watercress and Cherry Tomato salad and Yucca fries rounded out this great dish.
The Chuleta Pork chop was smoked and tender and served with a Creole Okra and Corn stew on top. Delicious!
Riopa Viejo, twice braised Flank Steak in a Creole sauce completed our trifecta of entrees.
We miraculously pushed through our food coma and ordered the Tres Leche for dessert and it was no joke. A creamy and sweet Marshmallow Merengue layer on top landed this Cuban Classic the top spot on our list as the best Tres Leches we’ve ever had. We dove in so fast that I forgot to take a picture!
The Guava and Cheese Empanadas were very addicting and lasted about 30 seconds once they hit our table.
So it goes without saying that Carl Ruiz has hit the nail on the head with La Cubana New York and I, The Grateful Chef, urges you to go and see for yourself. It’s right across W. 15th st from the Chelsea Market...make a day out of it and go...Just GO!
